People ask, “Are there are many myths about sailing?” Yes, many myths abound. Here are the big ones.
HARD TO LEARN— This is a sturdy chestnut promoted by motorboat dudes, for whom heavy lifting comprises a case of beer. In fact, sailing is easy to learn because the principals are fairly straightforward. Once you realize how the wind affects the sail, it all seems quite logical. There is a certain intellectual challenge to sailing, but it makes it that more invigorating. One- or two-day classes are taught everywhere, most prominently by the American Sailing Association. (Watch video above.) Let’s Go Sail promotes itself as teaching people to sail fast on a 32-foot boat tricked out for speed and efficiency.
Correcting 6 Myths About SailingEXPENSIVE— Compared to what? Compared to motor-boating, sailing is cheap because the fuel of wind is virtually free. It can certainly become expensive to buy a big sailboat, but these days there are numerous options for renting, joining a club, or time-sharing. If you decide to buy, you can sail quite nicely on a mid-size boat without having to trick it out with pricey electronic gadgets. Keep it simple. Let’s Go Sail has kept rates the same for 10 years, while promoting semi-private voyages spanning a serene three hours in which only one other couple participates.
The best Williamsburg boat tour offers an inexpensive cruise daily for up to 6 people. Rates have remained the same for ten years. It’s an extraordinary experience for couples. Leave your worries behind. Enjoy the thrill of moving with the wind without a care in the world.
LABORIOUS— Labor-intensive, perhaps, but happily so. There is a certain level of physical work associated with sailing: raising the sails, adjusting them, tacking the boat, adjusting various controls. None of these is particularly difficult, and they can be learned in an afternoon. Eventually the physicality becomes part of the adventure. At Let’s Go Sail, you get to leave your worries behind while experiencing the thrill of moving with the wind without a care in the world. Where else can you find a 3-hour sailboat charter that lets you exhale and relax as you enjoy comfort, stability and speed. Put life back on an even keel with a romantic experience for a birthday or anniversary.
TIME-CONSUMING—It used to take an hour or more to set up the boat to go sailing. But modern boats by the Big Three manufacturers Hunter, Catalina and Beneteau have made it possible to get underway in ten minutes. New technology and reliable systems make sailing quite efficient. The other time-killer is the trip to the boat. If you live 50 miles away, move closer. You’ll live longer.
Put life back on an even keel with a romantic experience for a birthday or anniversary. 3-hour sailboat cruise as a semi-private yachting charter lets you exhale and relax as you enjoy comfort, stability & speed. Semi-private yachting charter.
FOR MEN ONLY — Not true. Women enjoy sailing today more than ever, and particularly a romantic cruise. Couples get to enjoy a romantic getaway as they sit up on the bow for privacy and Let’s Go Sail provides professional photos for free. First-time or skilled mariners are welcome to sail a modern-32-foot sailboat in a unique setting of wildlife and Fall foliage or Spring bloom. It makes for an extraordinary anniversary idea.

Correcting 6 Myths A bout SailingDOCKING—Nothing strikes the fear of God in a skipper like docking, exacerbated by his wife’s agitation. But you’re not expected to sail the boat into the dock or the slip. It’s why they come with engines. One expects a certain amount of knocking about, and that’s why they have fenders. Just take it easy. A rule of thumb: Proceed into the slip only as fast as you’re willing to bump the boat into the dock if braking doesn’t work well. The American Sailing Association has a one-day course in docking for sailors. Or you can join another boat as crew for the expressed lesson in docking. Videos help too. Eventually you’ll find that stern-to is the preferred docking position because it’s a to easier to get on and off the boat that way. Then you can blast out gracefully. Once you master backing into a slip you’ll be a mariner hero, trust me.

Myths About Sailing

DANGEROUS—To be sure, falling off a boat is dangerous. But with careful instruction, one learns to handle the heeling of the boat to maintain balance and stability. The other distinctive danger on a sailboat is the boom, but the Big Three have re-engineered their rigs to fly the booms to swing over anyone as tall as 6-feet-3. The other danger fear is weather. Say it’s raining, hard. Can the boat take it? Can the skipper take it? Then you’ll be fine. Feel free to go below to get out of the storm. As for lightening, it’s true that a sailboat mast is a potential target out on the water, but lightening rarely strikes. I’ve never seen it on the York River or Chesapeake Bay in my 30 years at sea.
Myths about sailingTOO MUCH JARGON — Let’s break this down to two parts. The first part is the historical jargon dating back centuries, but no one except poets and drinkers care about that. The second part comprises modern terminology used to operate the boat. Some terms like “boom” become intuititive once your head gets struck by it. A lifeline will save you from falling overboard. Other terms such as port and starboard convey right and left side of the boat regardless of where one stands. You may have a right or a left as I face you, but the boat has only one or the other. Perhaps the most confusing term is the sheet, or line. One would think the sails would be sheets, but it turns out they’re called (wait for it) sails. After a while, the terms become second nature and fun to work with.
