Best Sailing Movies
Deadly fearful

People often ask, “What are the best sailing movies?” Geni and John’s Nautical web page ranks hundreds of movies going back to the 1930s. Dead Calm is a thriller starring Nicole Kidman. It was filmed almost entirely at sea and presents accurately the difficulty of navigating under terrible conditions.

White Squall, starring Jeff Bridges, ranks as “one of the best sailing movies ever made” for its excellent true story as well as breath-taking sailing. The plot is predictable but nonethelss tragic. Sting recorded the theme song “Valpariso,” perfectlly haunting. Afterward, the real captain never went to sea again. Instead he became one of the very first people to serve in the Peace Corps. See the trailer in a video below.

Wind recounts an America’s Cup race with real 12-meter boats. John found it “preferable to the real thing since Matthew Modine and Jennifer Grey are better-looking and more likable than Dennis Conner.”

Captain Ron is a hilarious comedy starring Kurt Russell and Martin Short, with competent sailing scenes. John hated Open Water 2: Adrift, but I liked it for posing a plausible dilemma. Three couples dive off their sailboat to swim and can’t get back on. To complicate matters, an infant remains onboard alone in the cabin.

Dolphins Top Engineers

Among unrelated people sailing on the York River one day, we wound up having an astrological engineer, industrial engineer, chemical engineer and mechanical engineer. None of that mattered when at least three pods of dolphin popped up near the Sara Creek channel. Kate Risher shot excellent photos with her Nikon D-7000 with a lens aperture of 18-105 millimeters.

Sailing with Pathologist

Tricia Cottrell is a newly minted pathologist doing her residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. While sailing the York with her husband Steven Handy, she said, “We have to communicate closely with surgeons because their first question when removing a tumor is, ‘Did I get it all?’ If a patient has a lump, she obviously wants to know if it’s cancer. But it may present as immature, and we just can’t tell. We can narrow it down, but sometimes it’s tough to diagnose. That’s very difficult for patients. What surprised me is how many young people in their 40s die from colon cancer, ovarian cancer, and breast cancer.”
