People ask, “Is extreme sailing dangerous?” This YouTube video shows how perilous it can be to sail a performance catamaran, such as found in the 2014 America’s Cup. By 2021 they were attaching the air foils to sloops for racing. The Vendee World was nearly all foiled sloops. Better that you stay with a traditional sloop for safety’s sake.

Hardy Sailors

They did well in brisk winds.

Who says it’s too cold to sail? Tonya and Chad Adamson of Newport News took his Aunt Deb and Uncle Doug Thomas sailing on a brisk post-Thanksgiving sail along the York River. The sun was shining and the temperature inched up to 50 in a still calm that left the river glassy, but the air was warm.

The Thomases are hardy sailors, for he is certified by ASA for offshore catamarans and they have circumnavigated the British Virgin Islands. They are thinking about a sailboat to trailer around lakes in Colorado, where they live, but first they may get an RV and roam the West.

It’s easy to assume that people out there have already seen the West, but it’s a big country. The families enjoyed a fine afternoon and were good sports when suddenly the engine backfired. That required a tow to port, which I fortuitously got from my friend Sebastian Salas, who was nearby on the river.

Fighting Upright

sailing uprightAndrea Lockwood and Yves Menard of Ottawa, Ontario, sailed the York River on a bright sunny day to sharpen up her skills at handling wind gusts. They found intriguing the Battle of Yorktown and the contribution of the French to the victory. And they enjoyed the nuances of history presented by Revolutionary City in Colonial Williamsburg. The painting of Redoubt 10 shows how difficult both sides found it to fight upright.

It turns out they recently toured Indonesia and are looking to take the Trans-Siberian Rail through China and Russia. They departed to go kayaking off the Maryland coast of the Atlantic Ocean, in November no less. Their son Jeremy is no slouch in the Adventure Department, having worked and traveled New Zealand, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. He is 23.
