People often ask, “What’s the magic of sailing?” This is adapted from Migael Scherer’s book “Sailing to Simplicity, Life Lessons Learned at Sea.” The author’s writings are in italics, and mine follow.
Sailing to SimplicityUpon leaving the dock, the sense of escape is immediate and intoxicating. You did it! You left the land behind and with it all the issues it brings every day. For at least a little while, your worries are behind you. That’s partly because you have to apply serious concentration to the task at hand. Safety is paramount for everyone on board. People need to keep their center of gravity down by sitting down. As the engine putters, we slowly leave the marina and head into the creek and eventually the river.
When something happens, confront it. When it’s over, empty your mind of it. Put another way, once at sea forget the land. If you confronted the problem on land, fine. Out here, empty your mind of it because there’s little you can about it now – on land or sea. Keep moving, avoid looking back. If something difficult comes up while sailing, confront it and solve it. Did the wind change direction? Did the tide change? Is that debris up ahead in the water? What about that buouy that looks like it’s on a collision course? Stay alert to address these issues promptly. It’s all part of the great adventure.
NeverwhereWe’re supposed to be getting away from petty concerns, not creating new ones. Sailing away will help achieve that. Out on the water, don’t start an argument over anything land- or sea-related. Try to block any petty concerns. Hoist the sails and turn off the engine. Study the water, the sky, the birds, the wind. As the video above says, there is no hurry. Take your time, go slow. As the photo at right says, take a ride on Neverhwere.
The best Williamsburg boat tour offers safe “social distance sailing” daily for up to 6 people. It’s an extraordinary experience for couples. Leave your worries behind. Enjoy the thrill of moving with the wind without a care in the world.
Fly the spinnaker. When the weather is fair, a following sea is a joy. Especially if you can fly a spinnaker. A following sea suggests movement downwind, and that’s spinnaker time unless it’s blowing over 10 mph. The larger point is that when the weather is fair, any sea is a joy. Take good weather as it comes and savor it. That’s sailing to simplicity.
In Winter we often discover a certain joy in hardship after the hardship is over. If we can discover it while it is happening then winter will have its wonders. It’s too cold to sail, which moves related activities inside. These include planning, blogging, maintenance, budgeting and more. Much of the maintenance is still outside, and it’s axiomatic that we rarely find women and children on the hards at the marina. Winter work has its wonders in accomplishment, improvement and exploration.
If your mind is torn by two conflicting desires, the contradiction will destroy your mind’s unity and tranquility. Choose one or the other, and block the other one out. Go sailing and put work behind you. It will always be there when you get back. Try to avoid the contradiction by focusing on one thing at a time and doing it well.
Seize the moment, experience the present, don’t let anything slip by. This is the single biggest reason to remain quiet at sea. The wind and waves offer a unique opportunity of contemplation. Seize it.
Kiss the helmsperson. It often happens that our greatest troubles arise from ourselves. We worry too much, we beat ourselves up, we can’t lighten up, we think too much. Sailing takes enough concentration to shed all those worries and focus on something other than ourselves. Seize the moment to kiss your spouse.
When the fale-force winds come, it is always the big tall trees that get blown over, while the pliant little grass just sways back and forth. Go with the flow, quit worrying, don’t fight the tide, avoid negativity, remain humble like the little grass.
Don’t pursue a superfluous amount of material things. Otherwise you will become a slave to them. Sail simply, without too many electronics or gizmos. Stay small, without the burden or docking or repairing a yacht. Like the boat at the left says, get disconnected from electronic and other things to keep it simple. Go out frequently because it’s easier than deploying a yacht. Sail with just a few friends instead of a gaggle.

Sailing to Simplicity

Psychologists look at life’s problems and suggest that people try to IMPROVE themselves one letter at a time.
I = imagery. If you’re on the bus or stuck in traffic or can’t fall asleep, think about the sailboat heeling to 15 degrees. The waves are shooting out from the bow, and the water makes wonderful sounds on the hull. Lean back on the coaming and take it in.
M = meaning. Sailing has genuine meaning for all the attributes it brings psychologically and physically. Plus the accomplishment of sailing the boat, maintaining it and fixing it.
Relax on the boat
Enjoy the moment.
P = Pray/practice. Practice improves one’s skills to the point of muscle memory. It’s like driving a car, except that on a sailboat you can’t text and drive because there’s too much going on.
R = Relax. Sailing eases the mind like nothing else. But you have to let the relaxation overtake you by minimizing the details that distract.
O = One thing in the moment. This is the Zen of sailing, found in music and on the water. It’s also called working in the Zone, which is not to be confused with zoned-out.
V = Vacation. You don’t have to take a trip out of town. Consider every sail a mini-vacation.
E = Encouragement. As a become more experienced, you’ll get to encourage yourself to continue to grow. Encouragement reminds us that something is progressing and needs attention. Encourage yourself to enjoy sailing to simplicity.

Cleaning Up

The National Park Service has been removing invasive bamboo from the shoreline of historic Yorktown. Good luck with that. In a related note, I asked York County about the moorings off Yorktown. One is sinking (at right) and another is listing badly (below). Capt. James Scruggs, dockmaster at nearby Riverwalk
