Sailing Lessons

Four people from diverse backgrounds met to take introductory sailing lessons on the York River. They learned how to put a sail up while facing the wind. They learned that the Close Reach is the optimal way to sail, just off the wind.

Sailing LessonsThey found the Beam Reach to be a safe way to speed along while maintaining the boat on a flatter heel. They tried the Broad Reach to run downwind. They learned how to execute a Man Overboard drill to pick someone up in less than a minute. As it happened, we came across a brand new child’s raft floating out to sea from the nearby beach. So we retrieved that too. MOB is a handy drill.

Sailing LessonsAnd they got to see dolphins for the first time this year!

Later in the day the Goldberg family of four from New York came over from Mobjack Bay, where they’re staying in an Airbnb house on the water.
