Yorktown Museum ProgressingExactly a year ago I wrote about the confusion between the new Museum of the American Revolution  in Philadelphia (right) and the new American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. The latter is likely to scoop the former by opening this year instead of next. This is from a news release May 31:

Yorktown Museum ProgressingThe Yorktown Victory Center is open and welcomes visitors to enjoy indoor exhibits and the recreated Continental Army encampment and Revolution-era farm while construction is underway to transform the site into the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown by late 2016. The project includes an 80,000-square-foot building encompassing exhibition galleries, classrooms and support functions, and enhanced and revitalized outdoor living-history areas. The name will transition to “American Revolution Museum at Yorktown” in conjunction with the debut of an introductory film and permanent exhibition galleries October 15 and 16, 2016.

The 18-foot-wide sculpture of an eagle mantling two eaglets between its outstretched wings, a stars-and-stripes shield on its chest, has been mounted on the pediment crowning the main entrance of the Yorktown Victory Center. Crafted by nationally prominent sculptor David H. Turner, this iconic symbol of the United States is titled “Freedom’s Sentinel.”
Yorktown Museum ProgressingWork on construction of outdoor exhibit and visitor amenity areas is moving forward with Daniel & Company as general contractor. Significant new features at the Continental Army encampment and Revolution-era farm are an amphitheater for artillery demonstrations and a building to represent quarters for enslaved people. The project, to be completed in early 2017, also includes an informational pavilion and amenities building.
Hours of operation are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (until 6 p.m. June 15-August 15) daily year-round. Admission is $9.75 for adults and $5.50 for ages 6-12, free to children under 6 and to residents of James City and York counties and the City of Williamsburg, including College of William and Mary students, with proof of residency. A combination ticket is available with Jamestown Settlement, where locals also receive free admission. For more information, call (757) 253-4838 or visit www.historyisfun.org.
