Two couples from Pennsylvania and New Jersey got to sail the expansive and historic York River while Air Force One flew overhead. The presidential jet, of which there may be three, flies from Dover AFB to Langley AFB in Hampton to do touch-and-go practice landings. Sometimes it lands at nearby Williamsbrg-Newport News International since the President has been known to go there.
We saw the plan fly low and slow across the York several times, and once directly overhead. It’s distinguished by a robin’s egg blue hull and the American Flag on the fantail. People get excited at the ability to take a photo since the plane is flying so low and slowly, multiple times as well. If you can’t get that photo, you need to move on to sketching.
Of course, it’s officially Air Force One only when the President is on board. One time we saw President Obama fly over at 10,000 feet. He was on his way to North Dakota to visit his 50th state before he left office after eight years. The plane is indistinguishable at that height. But it was distinctive for the diamond of four fighter jets surrounding the plane. Mighty impressive.
WALT Class
Members, alumni and friends matriculated three exciting Sundays of intense sailing. They participated through the Williamsburg Area Learning Tree and Williamsburg Charter Sails in the 17th annual spring class. They underwent 15 hours of instruction in winds of 15-20 mph along the York River and became adroit on all points of sail.
Update: WALT shut down in 2018 for lack of support by the sponsoring church. An attempt to revive it failed. Many of the courses were innovative and creative as well as affordable. RIP WALT.
