Nautical Chaos

Dozens of deadrises and hundreds of observers on land and sea mingled during the annual Battle of the Boats off Riverwalk Landing. It was hard to determine who won after several heats. The next day offered a unique contest to see how fast a deadrise can go in reverse while docking.

Tradition Revived

The Yorktown Workboat Races were a long‑standing tradition that died out in 2005. They were revived in 2024 by the group Workboat Life, led by Allen Holston, and immediately drew huge crowds and watermen participation.

The revival has now expanded into a full weekend festival, with:

  • Model workboat displays

  • Seafood industry and watermen‑heritage exhibits

  • Art and interactive displays

  • Nautical Chaos

Why It Matters

These races are:

  • A major local maritime draw — lots of foot traffic at Riverwalk

  • A showcase of Chesapeake working‑boat culture

  • A natural tie‑in for storytelling on your charters

  • A potential cross‑promotion opportunity during Sail250 and other 2026 events

The deadrise is the iconic Chesapeake workboat — built for crabbing, oystering, and fishing — and the races put that heritage on full display.

Home at Last

Home at Last

The USS Carney cruised into Yorktown NWS as the first ship to come back from the Strait of Hormuz since the war began against Iran. Meanwhile, the USCG Training Center performed towing operations on the north side of the Coleman Bridge to avoid choppy surf on the York River.

Home at last

The recent history of USS Carney is defined by one of the most intense operational tempos faced by any U.S. Navy destroyer in decades. Her 2023–2024 deployment placed her at the center of the Red Sea crisis, where Houthi forces in Yemen began launching waves of missiles and drones toward Israel and commercial shipping following the October 7 attacks.

The turning point came on 19 October 2023, when Carney—then transiting the Red Sea—intercepted a complex, multi‑axis barrage of land‑attack cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles fired by Houthi forces. U.S. officials initially reported that the ship shot down three cruise missiles and several drones, but later assessments confirmed the tally as four cruise missiles and 15 drones—a scale of engagement unprecedented for a U.S. warship since World War II.

This 10‑hour battle marked the first U.S. military action taken to defend Israel after the outbreak of the war. The engagement was not a planned drill; sailors recalled hearing the unexpected order to clear the weather decks, followed immediately by the sound of the ship’s SM‑2 missiles and 5‑inch gun firing in real combat for the first time in their careers.

Sustained Combat Operations

After the initial engagement, Carney remained in the region as Houthi attacks continued. The destroyer became one of the Navy’s most heavily engaged ships, repeatedly intercepting missiles, drones, and—critically—anti‑ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs), a threat category far more challenging due to their speed and trajectory. Her AN/SPY‑1 radar and Aegis combat system were pushed to their limits, with some engagements requiring sailors to detect, classify, clear the decks, and fire within 9 to 20 seconds—all under real‑world threat conditions.

Carney deployed on 27 September 2023, initially as part of the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group, which surged to the Eastern Mediterranean after the October 7 attacks. As the regional crisis deepened, the destroyer shifted to operations in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, later integrating with the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group.

Crewmembers later reflected that they had expected a routine deployment with port visits—not months of sustained combat. The ship’s executive officer briefed the crew early that the situation could escalate, but few anticipated the scale of what followed.

Return Home and Operational Legacy

By the time Carney returned home on 20 May 2024, she had conducted 51 separate engagements against Houthi missiles and drones—an extraordinary operational record for a single deployment. Despite the intensity of the threat environment, the ship suffered no damage and no crew casualties, a testament to the crew’s training, discipline, and the capabilities of the Aegis system.

USS Carney’s 2023–2024 deployment represents a watershed moment in modern naval warfare. It demonstrated:

  • The first sustained real‑world test of U.S. Navy ballistic‑missile defense against live ASBM threats.

  • The increasing complexity of regional conflicts spilling into maritime domains.

  • The ability of a single Arleigh Burke–class destroyer to defend allies, protect commercial shipping, and maintain freedom of navigation under continuous threat. — Chat GPT
