Stuck Again

It took more than an hour for the USS Jason Dunham to transit the Coleman Bridge because it was stuck closed. Afterward, it got stuck at the end while closing. Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions.

According to ChatGPT:

Yes, the Coleman Bridge is experiencing extended delays due to a mechanical issue. Openings now take up to an hour and will continue to be affected until further notice.

The George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge on Route 17, which spans the York River between Yorktown and Gloucester Point, is currently undergoing mechanical difficulties that are significantly impacting its operation:

  • Bridge openings now require manual procedures, adding an extra 25 to 40 minutes to each opening.

  • Total opening times may last between 45 to 60 minutes, compared to the usual duration.

  • The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has asked marine vessels to provide at least two hours’ notice before passing through to allow for proper staffing and preparation.

  • These delays affect both vehicular and maritime traffic, so drivers should expect longer wait times and plan accordingly.

VDOT has not provided a timeline for resolving the issue, and the extended opening procedures will remain in place until further notice. If you’re planning to cross the bridge or travel by boat in the area, it’s best to check for updates and allow extra time.

Stuck Again II

It was another busy day, with 10 people scattered over two sails that included Sailing Lessons and the new and improved History Tour. Once again, the bridge got stuck. This time a USCG Cutter was poised to depart NWS Yorktown, but it too 20 minutes to begin to open the spans, presumably manually.

Stuck Again IIEarlier, our guests called to say they were caught up in a horrific accident because the backup extended for miles. In fact, it was backed up for the bridge.

Three dogs coexisted well on the morning sail, without incident. The chaos came in the tangled leashes, but none of them fell overboard as a result.

Stuck Again IIAlex and Natalie Burton came in from Suffolk for sailing lessons. She used to run a marina in their home state of Kansas. “It’s called Wildcat Marina, outside of Manhattan. It has about 45 boats, no sailboats though. We didn’t have too many problems with wild parties or drinking. The biggest issue was beavers eating into the electrical wires and causing shorts. Alex is a welder, traveling welder actually. “I’m currently working on the Surry Nuclear Plant, but I’ve been to five countries and 15 states,” he said.
