Windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing and parasailing are all exhilarating water sports, but each offers a distinct experience shaped by its equipment, technique and environment.
We got into this one day with friends of Jeanne Kushabar, a member of our Encore Sailing group. They are repeat customers who get a discount. Ron Mager used to windsurf on Lake Erie, and he told us the difficulty of tacking and gybing in a stiff wind. As someone else famously said, “YOU are the mast on the damn thing.”
Chat GPT drew the distinctions nicely.
🌊 Surfing is the most traditional of the four. It involves riding ocean waves on a board without any sail or kite. Surfers paddle out to catch waves and rely on balance, timing and wave-reading skills. It’s purely wave-powered.
💨 Windsurfing combines elements of sailing and surfing. Riders stand on a board equipped with a sail mounted on a mast. By adjusting the sail’s angle to the wind, they control speed and direction. Windsurfing requires wind rather than waves. Advanced riders often seek choppy conditions for jumps and tricks. It demands good core strength and coordination.
🪁 Kitesurfing (or kiteboarding) uses a small board and a large kite controlled by lines and a harness. The kite catches wind to propel the rider across the water. That allows for high speeds and aerial maneuvers. Unlike windsurfing, the kite is not attached to the board, offering more freedom of movement. Kitesurfing is more technical and requires mastering wind control and kite safety. You can easily crash from 50 feet up in the air.
🪂 Parasailing is the most passive of the four. Participants are harnessed to a parachute-like canopy (parasail) and towed behind a boat. As the boat accelerates, the parasail lifts the rider into the air for a scenic, floating experience. There’s no control over direction or speed. I’s more about enjoying the view than performing stunts.
In sum:
• Surfing: wave-powered, no wind gear.
• Windsurfing: sail-powered, board-mounted sail.
• Kitesurfing: kite-powered, harnessed control.
• Parasailing: boat-towed, airborne sightseeing.
Estuaries etc.
Earlier we got to talking about how the York River is really an estuary because it has freshwater linked to saltwater. Nicole Duquette googled the difference between tributaries and estuaries, and later I asked Chat GPT.
Tributaries are freshwater streams that feed into larger rivers, while estuaries are coastal zones where freshwater from rivers mixes with saltwater from the ocean.
>Here’s a deeper look at their differences:
🌊 Tributaries
• Definition: A tributary is a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger one.
• Function: They contribute water, sediment, and nutrients to the main river.
• Location: Found inland, often in mountainous or hilly regions.
• Water Type: Always freshwater.
• Example: The Missouri River is a tributary of the Mississippi River.
🌅 Estuaries
• Definition: An estuary is a partially enclosed coastal body of water where freshwater from rivers meets and mixes with saltwater from the sea.
• Function: Serve as transition zones between river environments and marine ecosystems.
• Location: Found at the mouths of rivers, along coastlines.
• Water Type: Brackish (a mix of freshwater and saltwater).
• Example: The Chesapeake Bay is an estuary where several rivers meet the Atlantic Ocean.
Yorktown Yacht
We spent hours tacking upriver in an ebb tide to get close to a $10 million yacht docked at Yorktown. I suggested to Derek Chartier that he could leap from the bow and into the soft dingy on the starboard side. Then he could spring upward to the pilot house to take over the ship. He nodded, as if to say I was crazier than he already thought.
Women enjoy sailing today more than ever, and particularly a romantic cruise. Couples get to enjoy a romantic getaway as they sit up on the bow for privacy, and Let’s Go Sail provides professional photos for free. First-time or skilled mariners are welcome to sail a modern-32-foot sailboat in a unique setting of wildlife and Fall foliage or Spring bloom. It makes for an extraordinary anniversary idea.
