For the second time in four years, my wife Bonnie and I went to North Carolina in search of other sailing venues, perhaps for relocating the business. Everywhere you look while driving near the bays, wide vistas invite comparisons to other bays.
The first thing we learned was the need to amend our intro pitch about Chesapeake Bay to include the estuaries of the Pamlico and Albemarle rivers to comprise virtually half of the state. That puts them second to the Chesapeake Bay, as we discovered at the NC Estuarium Museum.
Estuaries Everywhere
North Carolina’s estuaries are vital ecological zones where freshwater from rivers and streams meets the saltwater of the Atlantic Ocean. These areas, which include Albemarle Sound, Pamlico Sound, and the numerous inlets and bays along the coast, serve as dynamic interfaces between land and sea. They are characterized by brackish water, mixing the salinity levels of both environments.
Estuaries in North Carolina provide essential habitats for a wide range of fish, shellfish and migratory birds. Blue crabs, oysters and striped bass depend on these estuaries for breeding, nursery, and feeding grounds. The wetlands and submerged grasses found in estuarine environments mitigate climate change by absorbing excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Our Route
North Carolina’s estuaries are vital to the state’s economy. We traveled from Washington to Belhaven and then on to Oriental. Commercial and recreational fishing are significant industries, with estuarine areas providing a substantial portion of the fish and shellfish caught. Tourism also thrives on the estuarine ecosystems, with activities such as birdwatching, kayaking, and boating drawing visitors from across the region.
However, these estuaries face numerous challenges, including pollution from agricultural runoff, urban development, and climate change. Rising sea levels and increased storm frequency also pose a threat to the delicate balance of these ecosystems. Conservation efforts are essential to protect and sustain North Carolina’s estuaries for future generations.
The Other Washington
It took three hours by car to reach Washington, North Carolina, often referred to as the “Original Washington,” at the confluence of the Pamlico and Tar rivers. Established in 1776, it holds the distinction of being one of the oldest towns in the state and was named in honor of George Washington.
The town is known for its well-preserved historic district, which features a blend of antebellum and Victorian-era architecture. Visitors can stroll along its picturesque streets, lined with stately homes, quaint shops, and local eateries. Washington’s downtown area, with its brick-paved roads and waterfront views, offers a taste of southern hospitality and a step back in time. Less well-preserved were many of the boats at nearby McCotter’s Marina, as shown here.
The Riverwalk
One of the town’s defining features is its waterfront, where the Tar River flows into the Pamlico Sound. The riverfront area is home to marinas, parks, and walking trails. The town also hosts the annual celebration of its maritime heritage, which includes boat tours, festivals, and live music.
Dozens of boats line the riverwalk, and more are located in marinas to the east. Some of them looked beaten up, either by storms or neglect. This one has a website that’s no longer functioning. That suggests there isn’t very much competition because there isn’t very much potential business.
In addition to its scenic beauty, Washington is home to a strong sense of community and local pride. Its historical significance is celebrated through museums, such as the Washington Waterfront Underground Railroad Museum, and local events that highlight the town’s cultural diversity and history.
Today, Washington is a small but thriving town that combines old-world charm with modern amenities. It continues to attract visitors and residents who appreciate its unique blend of history, natural beauty, and small-town Southern hospitality.
Belhaven Charm
Belhaven, North Carolina, is a charming waterfront town nestled in Beaufort County along the north shore of the Pungo River. Known as the “Birthplace of the Intercoastal Waterway,” Belhaven offers natural beauty, rich history, and small-town hospitality. With a population of 1,400, it’s a close-knit community that embraces its maritime heritage.
The town spans two square miles, with nearly a quarter of its area covered by water, making it a haven for boating and fishing. Belhaven’s location in North Carolina’s Inner Banks region gives it a unique coastal charm without the hustle of larger beach towns. Boaters enjoy easy access to the Pamlico Sound and Atlantic Ocean.
The Belhaven Marina is perhaps unique for having virtually no boats, just a trawler and a workboat. The retirement community next door has more boats. The marina sports a pole with the water levels of hurricanes going back to the record-breaking Hazel in 1954.
Hospital Closed
Though the town faced challenges with the closure of its hospital in 2014, Belhaven continues to adapt and thrive. A non-emergency clinic now serves the community, and local efforts focus on promoting tourism and supporting small businesses.
Whether you’re dropping anchor for a weekend getaway or seeking a quiet place to call home, Belhaven offers a warm welcome and a slower pace of life that’s increasingly rare. It’s a place where the river meets tradition, and every visitor becomes part of the story.
A Gem Too Far
Nestled along the Neuse River in Pamlico County, Oriental, North Carolina, is a charming waterfront town known as the “Sailing Capital of North Carolina.” With a population of just under 900, Oriental offers a peaceful, close-knit community that draws visitors and boaters from around the world.
To our surprise, there was no downtown downtown. Just a few shops scattered about. All the sailboats were out of town by a mile or so, some of them quite fancy. This would be a fine place to sail, but not to charter. As it would take too long for people to get there from the closest city, New Bern.
Life in Oriental revolves around the water. The town’s location on the Inner Banks provides year-round opportunities for sailing, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. Monthly regattas and boating events keep the harbor lively, while fishing trawlers still bring in fresh catches of shrimp, crab, and flounder depending on the season.
Walkable Downtown
Beyond its nautical appeal, Oriental boasts a walkable downtown filled with art galleries, seafood restaurants, and specialty shops. The town hosts vibrant festivals and quirky holiday celebrations that reflect its warm, welcoming spirit. Historical walking tours, cycling paths, and a local history museum offer glimpses into Oriental’s rich past—from Native American roots to colonial land grants and pirate lore.
The town’s name traces back to the steamship Oriental, which wrecked off Bodie Island in 1862. Inspired by the ship’s nameplate, Rebecca Midyette, wife of the first postmaster, suggested “Oriental” as a more fitting name for the village formerly known as Smith’s Creek. It was officially incorporated in 1899.
Visitors Return
Today, Oriental thrives on a blend of tourism, marine industries, and a laid-back lifestyle that captivates newcomers. Many who arrive “just for the night” end up staying for good. Whether you’re drawn by the call of the river or the charm of small-town living, Oriental is a place where time slows down and community shines.
