The York River, a tidal estuary flowing into the Chesapeake Bay, is home to a surprising array of wildlife—including the charismatic bottlenose dolphin. While not permanent residents, these marine mammals are frequent visitors during the warmer months, typically from late spring through early fall.
At Let’s Go Sail, dolphins tend to show up in mid-summer and leave by summer’s end. Imagine everyone’s surprise when a pod of 10+ showed up on a quiet afternoon in late September for a family from Charlottesville to enjoy.
We could see fins off in the distance, so I ran down below to get a large brass bell that I keep for just such an occasion.
Ryan Woodbury, who was celebrating her 50th birthday, vigorously rang the bell and I had to admonish her gently, “You’re not the Salvation Army.” Everyone laughed. I turned up the Spotify music and the dolphin drew closer.
They surrounded the boat and crisscrossed below it. This went on for ten minutes, an eternity in dolphin time on the water.
Dolphins are most commonly spotted in the lower reaches of the York, where salinity levels and water depth are more suitable. These areas, closer to the Chesapeake Bay, offer rich feeding grounds teeming with Atlantic croaker, spot and sea trout. Pod sightings peak in May and September, coinciding with seasonal migrations and fluctuations in prey abundance.
Before long, our group of dolphins drifted off. But we kept tacking to follow them, and sure enough they came back. This time, several of them jumped clear out of the water – a first for the 2025 sailing season. The Woodburys whooped and cheered.
The York’s tidal marshes, aquatic beds and estuarine zones support a complex food web that indirectly sustains dolphin populations. Although large marine mammals are generally infrequent in the river system, bottlenose dolphins are the most commonly observed species.
Their presence is a sign of healthy ecosystem dynamics and offers exciting opportunities for wildlife observation, especially near Yorktown and Gloucester Point. All of this is per the Virginia Institute of Marine Science along the banks of the York.
Dolphins are protected under federal law, and their appearances often delight locals and tourists alike. Researchers VIMS monitor these visits to better understand dolphin behavior and habitat use in estuarine environments.
People sometimes ask if they can chum the dolphins, and the answer is a hard No. They ask what they like to eat, and I reply, “The souls of infants.”
Occasionally, other marine mammals such as manatees have been documented in the York River, but these are rare and typically involve individuals straying far from their usual range.
In sum, while dolphins don’t call the York River home year-round, their seasonal visits add a touch of marine magic to Virginia’s historic waterways. At the end of this latest and perhaps last show of the season, we counted 35 minutes of dolphins — a record.
We also beat the approaching hurricane and made it back to port with days to spare. That was a reminder to Kate Woodbury of the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Helene. “I was in college at Asheville when the rains came, some 18 inches. We were flooded and then trapped with no way out. It took days to rescue us. Everyone behaved well despite the fear and hardship.”
Earlier, we took out a couple from Yorktown who work as veterinarians in Gloucester County. Another couple bored them with tales about their dogs. Lindsay and Weston Betts listened patiently, and I interjected quietly, “You must get this all the time.” They nodded.
At the end of the sail, I asked them the dumbest thing that people ask. They were ready. “‘Is the medicine really necessary?’ and ‘Is there a shot for that?'”

Further upriver, the scenery shifts to wooded banks and secluded inlets. It’s a perfect spot to drop anchor, swim, or simply relax with a book. The river’s gentle currents make it ideal for novice sailors, while its connection to the Chesapeake Bay offers more adventurous routes for seasoned mariners.
