Opening Day

After less than a week on the hards getting the bottom painted, Season 14 opened when a cold front blew through. It’s the first time I’ve had to shovel snow off the boat to go sailing.

Opening DayThe first family drove all the way from New Jersey just to sail. Shelly Ascione said, “We’ve been taking care of my parents for a year now as they declined. Once they passed, we needed a break and this is it.”

Their younger son Cole ran the helm in 10-15 mph winds as we reefed the mainsail to minimize heeling. “At the last minute, our other son didn’t come. He said, ‘Why do I want to drive all the way to Virginia from New Jersey to get on a boat when I can do that here instead?’ He’s 20, so he knows everything.”

Cole held on tight and picked up the game quickly as we zoomed down the York River, off Yorktown. Their German shepherd named Keller coped well with the heeling.

Opening Day

“He didn’t quite make it through Seeing Eye School,” Shelly explained. “He did great at everything for the blind person, including squeezing himself into a small space under an airplane seat. But he flunked the anxiety test. He wouldn’t sit there when the person got up from their chair. He wanted to stay right there.”

The upshot is that they got to keep his security vest, so he has quasi status as a seeing eye dog. “The hotel was going to charge us $150 a night for Keller, but they waived the fee because of the vest.”

The Asciones raised two other seeing eye dogs. “One is out in the world in Wisconsin and the other is in Michigan.” She added, “We don’t get to name the dogs; we just raise them. The name Keller is ironic, eh? As in Helen Keller.”

Opening Day

Tugboat Travails

The robust wind picked up in the afternoon for the Kinburg family from Wyoming. They were visiting Williamsburg and Virginia for the first time. This time the mainsail reef was barely halfway as the winds starting gusting over 20 mph. The skies were clear and cold as everyone bundled up for warmth.

Tyrell Kinburg is a homebuilder who used to serve on the water. “I was a merchant marine student and spent a stretch on tugboats going up and down the West Coast, all the way to Alaska. We towed huge barges. One time, we were in a storm with 40-foot crests. It was nerve-wracking because we had to slowly ride the wave up and then come crashing down.

“Some of these guys had 28 to 30 years on a tug, but they got sick right away. They would go off to their stateroom and lock the door. I wound up as first mate, doing all his work. The engine alarms would go off, so I had to go check on that. I even got to run the helm.”

Opening DayHe ran the helm perfectly on this day despite spray from the waves and heeling from the wind. Afterward, back at the dock, I asked if he ever missed the sea. “Yes. This was wonderful.”

Decapitation

Just kidding. Historian Lincoln Paine* wrote, “Medieval laws governing pilot included severe penalties for negligence or fraudulent claims of ability.” He quoted a 15th century text of maritime laws:

If it should happen that the pilot would not know the waters in the locality that he had claimed he new well and will not be able to perform the services that had agreed to perform, he should be immediately decpaitated, and no mercy or lenience should be given him.
