Good Riddance

As many as 20 derelict sailboats and motorboats on the Hards at York River Yacht Haven are in the process of being crushed and trucked away. A few wooden boats date to the 1940s. Once the hill is cleared and graded, more current boats will move here from down the hill. That will make room for an outdoor showroom by Boaters World-Williamsburg.

Update 2025

A year later, a half dozen derelicts still remain, and they’re getting ready to grade the hill with fresh topsoil. The dirt came from the bulkhead near the Yard. This spring, plans are to shore up the edge of the parking lot to install 20 more lifts for small motorboats.

Boater’s World, which took over the Yard last year, has changed plans. Instead of selling pontoon boats off the Hards, they are focusing on service. Currently a half dozen new boats belong to Bluewater Yachts.

One is sinking (at right) and another is listing badly (below). Capt. James Scruggs, dockmaster at nearby Riverwalk
