Foreign Sails

A couple from Northern Virginia enjoyed a beautiful day on the water with their two children. Lourdes Garcia-Calderon spent six months on a steam-powered cruise ship outfitted for educational research.

“We had 300-400 students and 200 crew, which was less than normal due to a SARS outbreak in China,” she said. “So there was no stopping in China. But we did the Pacific Rim to include Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the outreaches of Russia.

“Our worst storm encountered 30-40 foot swells as we went up and down, up and down with great force. Our professors turned green, but I was okay. In Russia, one of the students went ashore and brought back a local girl to show her the ship. It created an international incident because they thought she was defecting even though she wasn’t. Quite a trip.”

Later, Lourdes wrote a splendid and concise review on Trip Advisor: “We had a great day sailing. We had two kids with us aged 5 and 9, and both enjoyed being out on the water. We even went under the bridge, which they thought was fun.”

Foreign Sails

Dr. Tobias Miarka and his wife Katya returned from a sail a year earlier to find 20 mph winds blowing across the York ahead of a weather front. They were unfazed as we set sail with their son and his girlfriend, both of whom are attending the College of William & Mary.

We talked about the late Queen Elizabeth, whom I reported visited Williamsburg in 1957 and then 50 years later in 2007. That was unusual in that she rarely visited the same place twice.

“The same goes for restaurants,” Katya said. “She rarely went to dinner out in London, but she went to Bellamy’s twice. Toby added, “She also ordered takeout for 96 people.” Katya reported that King Charles is coming to America soon to commemorate our 250th anniversary. This is astonishing because both times that his mother came to Jamestown and Williamsburg, officials studiously avoided Yorktown because it was where Great Britain lost the American Revolution. How times change.
