Boy Sailor

A Yorktown dad drove over the Coleman Bridge to take his 8-year-old son sailing for the first time. Sirish Mulpur was thinking about buying a boat. “Noah is really excited about this. I don’t know where he got the idea, but he’s been reading and research about sailing. Today’s the day.”

Boy SailorSure enough, Noah turned out to be quite the boy sailor. He focused on the target and held the helm steady. He concentrated well and reacted appropriately to the wind and the waves. Later, they enjoyed time together up on the bow cushion.

The couple joining us on the cruise were especially encouraging of Noah and let him run the wheel for hours. I sent Sirish more info on formal training by ASA and suggested quite a future for Noah. Who knows, he could win a sailing scholarship to college.

Women enjoy sailing today more than ever, and particularly a romantic cruise. Couples get to enjoy a romantic getaway as they sit up on the bow for privacy, and Let’s Go Sail provides professional photos for free. First-time or skilled mariners are welcome to sail a modern-32-foot sailboat in a unique setting of wildlife and Fall foliage or Spring bloom. It makes for an extraordinary anniversary idea.

Birthday Sail

Birthday Sail

The VanKirk family of Williamsburg celebrated three birthdays July 12. Dad Steve turned 52 while twins Walker and Georgia turned 22. Walker helmed the boat for miles and sought information on ASA accreditation.

Horse SailorHorse Sailor

A Gloucester couple took time out from their 18-acre farm to sail with others on the York River during a breezy afternoon. What’s the ideal number? Kate Snelling said, “If you ask me, the perfect number of horses to own is four. Less than that diminishes the herd effect. One tends to get lonely. With four, you can split it up so two people ride in one direction and two in the other.”

As to value, “A riding horse can run anywhere from $800 to $20,000, depending on what shyster you’re dealing with selling horses. You can tell they’re lying because their lips are moving.” Her most unusual name? “Princess Knucklehead, and she’s nowhere near running the Kentucky Derby. In fact, you couldn’t get her near a track to run.”

Welding Sailor

Welding Sailor

From nearby Newport News, Sidney Chappell took his family sailing on a wonderful summer day of soft breezes. He used to work in the restaurant industry.

“Now I’m a welder, employed by Newport News Shipbuilding. The pay and the hours are much better, but it does get hot. In this weather, I’m constantly dripping sweat from my shield over my face. That bead you refer to is a steel wire coming through the acetylene torch. You lay that down as you go to get the two surfaces to adhere. I’m thinking of going out on my own as a contract welder, since the pay is three times greater. But I’d have to buy that welding machine to take on the road with me.”

His wife Carla said, “I never knew all that. I’ve never heard you talk about your job.”

Happy Family

Happy Family

The Garrett family of Williamsburg were by far the happiest crew this week. They took to sailing under the tutelage of Dad/Grandad Joseph as he showed them the ropes and the angles of sailing.
