Disaster Prone

The things you learn while sailing are amazing. Megan Key of Raleigh has worked dKeyisaster relief for Americorp and various church and secular agencies. She’s joined teams that were working floods, tornadoes and earthquakes in Arkansas, Mississippi, the upper Midwest and Haiti. Along the way, she found the best teams operate with autonomy but are respectful of local officials. Holding one’s emotions in check is important, but so is the flexibility to move quickly and adapt quickly to the scene. Her biggest fear on the job came from continued aftershocks with the Missouri earthquake. “I took the night watch since I couldn’t sleep anyway,” she said modestly. FEMA should recruit her as a proven leader.
