Red sails myth

“Red skies at night, sailor’s delight. Red skies in morning, sailors take warning.”

This old bromide is easy to remember but not necessarily correct. Any particular cloud cover at dawn would provide red skies in morning, but as the skies clear or the clouds shift, no rain is forthcoming. A better barometer is the local weather forecast, notably the marine forecast found on local TV weather websites.
